Prepare for Election Day: November 3, 2009.
What issues are important to you?
Are you familiar with the candidates who want to represent South Houston (i.e. South MacGregor, South Park, South Union, and Sunnyside)?
Are you aware candidates’ promises have made to South Houston residents?
How will you hold candidates accountable if they do not fulfill their promises to South Houston residents?
A good resource to learn about the current elected official’s voting record, campaign promises, issue positions, interest group rating, position papers, vetoes, speeches and public statements and campaign finances is: Project Vote Smart. Project Vote Smart considers its website as the Voter’s Self Defense System. Additionally, the website tracks President Obama’s campaign promises, which indicates President Obama is a man of his word because he continues to fulfill his campaign promises (a rare deed for local politicians).
Consequently, there are advantages and disadvantages to express your voting preference. All elected officials accept the responsibility to be public servants, but some voters experience discrimination based on who they voted for. For example: Voter “A” voted for the elected official and Voter “B” did not vote the elected official; therefore when voters “A” and “B” call the elected official to ask for assistance or services regarding a social issue; Voter “A” will likely receive prompt constituent attention and Voter “B” may not receive attention from the elected official.
In conclusion, prepare for Election Day; learn the issues and become familiar with the South Houston candidates to elect the candidates who will respond to your request for assistance; or be prepared to be ignored by the elected officials who you did not vote for. An excellent online source to visit if you are not sure where to go on voting day is scotthochberg.com.
Unfortunately, none of the current elected officials responded to support the My Houston Texas Organization [President Obama Supporters].
